Be able to differentiate the different kinds of WAN and remote access technologies. You must be able to tell the different speeds of the different remote access and WAN technologies. Tables 7.2 and 7.3 give speeds for some of these items.

Be able to describe each of the various remote access protocols. These protocols include the following:

■    Remote Access Service (RAS), which is used on Windows NT and 2000 to provide access to a host network

■    Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), which is a network transport protocol that is used to transport various types of other protocols (TCP/IP most often) over various types of remote access links (including dial-up, serial, parallel, and WAN)

■    Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), which is a network protocol that encapsulates, or tunnels, another protocol inside it for transport over an unsecure medium (i.e., encapsulates IPX for transmission over the Internet)

■    Independent Computing Architecture (ICA), which is used as a transport protocol over various types of remote access links between a Citrix WinFrame or Windows Terminal Server client and an ICA-based server

Be able to configure DUN on a Windows machine to connect to various types of servers using different protocols. This is done using the DialUp Networking Control Panel applet. It can be accessed through Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > Dial-Up Networking.
