Interaction Between the Browser and the Client

The ICA master browser is a crucial component to the ICA client. Without the ICA master browser, ICA clients would be unable to initiate a session with a MetaFrame server. The ICA client retrieves a list of available servers and applications from the master browser and uses that list to determine the server with which to connect. The client will attempt to locate the ICA master browser by querying an explicit list entered in the client connection configuration, or issuing a broadcast and querying the first Citrix server to respond. Since all Citrix servers know their master browser, either method will return the correct information. However, if there is no Citrix servers on the client’s submit, an explicit list must be provided to locate a master browser.

With Feature Release 1, Citrix has included the ability to use TCP for ICA browsing instead of UDP. This greatly facilitates ICA browsing through a firewall, which was a serious problem with the UDP browser service. It also allows communication with the new Citrix XML Service. The XML Service can provide published application data to ICA clients through either the TCP-HTTP network protocol or NFuse-enabled Web servers.

Application Publishing

Application publishing is an important concept with Citrix MetaFrame. It is the key to the seamless integration of MetaFrame servers with your existing desktops and one of the many ways in which Citrix tries to make ICA connections transparent to the end user. Basically, application publishing is the process by which an administrator can configure an application to be visible to the ICA master browser. When the application is “published,” the member server will update the master browser with the status of that application. ICA clients can make a direct connection to that application rather than to a desktop environment.
