If VPN connections are capable of sustaining all the Citrix traffic of remote networks, ICA Gateways should be implemented first to ensure proper conversions of data for browser communications and conversions to accommodate networking protocols. ICA Gateways contain lists that allow Citrix clients and servers to contact other Citrix Servers on different networks with different protocols. This setup is required for proper Citrix operation across VPN or WAN connections, as browser lists are determined via broadcasts. This ensures complete conversions rather that just supporting one browser or protocol within another.

Server Farms

Historically, client-server installations have been built around the single installation of each application on a server with all clients accessing the appropriate server. Over time, it has been recognized that some applications attract many users while others have only a few. Also, the usage of different applications fluctuates during the course of a month. While Microsoft Word may see fairly steady use, applications such as Microsoft Excel, and those for accounts payable and accounts receivable, experience higher usage toward the end of each month, quarter, and fiscal year and, possibly, at the middle of the month, depending on billing cycles. Planning and forecasting packages are typically used more heavily toward the beginning of each year, quarter, and month and presentation software use may fluctuate with sales and marketing programs and project reporting cycles. In a Server Farm, several servers are dedicated to running enterprise applications and all applications are installed on each of the servers. Load balancing is used to distribute the user workload and processing demand across all of the servers in the farm.
